In my 20's, Happy by Clinique was my signature scent. When I got pregnant with my middle child, my body chemistry changed and suddenly, the scent of Happy made me nauseated, headache-y, and markedly UNhappy. It wasn’t a bad perfume, but it wasn’t right for me anymore.

This is often true of people as well. Someone can be a really.good.person and not be one of our people. You and I can be really good people and yet some folks won’t like us. These truths can simultaneously exist, and we might never understand why. Perhaps our energy and theirs don’t mesh. Who knows.

But, it’s okay. We don’t have to be friends with everyone. We don’t have to have great relationships — or any for that matter — with people. Even people who share our DNA. You alone are responsible for your mental health, and if that means removing people from your life? Bye! You don’t need permission to safeguard your sanity. Don’t give your energy to people who aren’t helping you reach your highest good, and quit chasing after people who don’t want you in their life.

Sometimes people do things that have nothing to do with us, but their actions feel hurtful. Were they trying to hurt us? Maybe. Flip it around. Sometimes we do things, and others are hurt by our actions. Were we trying to hurt them? I’m never trying to hurt people by anything I say or write. Never. Regardless of my intentions, sometimes…
